The Miracle of Mamey Sapote Oil

This month kicks off a New Year!  Let’s explore how you and your family can benefit from the amazing qualities of Mamey Sapote Oil – a truly remarkable botanical extract. The miracle oil is extracted from the fruit, native to Central America and Southern Mexico.  The Mamey Sapote tree (Pouteria sapota) and plant (Mammea americana) is cultivated throughout Southern and Central Mexico, the Caribbean, as well as Florida and parts of South America. The highly rich botanical oil has been treasured for centuries for its exceptional nutritional value, as well as for its skin and hair health care properties.

Description

Pouteria sapota tree is a large evergreen tree that can reach the height of 15 to 45 m (49 to 148 ft) at maturity. The Mamey Sapote tree prefers to grow in smooth sandy, deep, clay and fertile soils. A typical mature tree may produce 200 to 500 fruits per year. The fruit of the Pouteria sapota or Mamey Sapote is considered botanically a berry, about 10 to 25 cm (4 to 10 in) long and 8 to 12 cm (3 to 4.5 in) wide.  The fruit has a yellow- brownish skin with a texture somewhat between sandpaper and the fuzz of a peach.  The fruits texture is creamy and soft, and the flavor is a mix of sweet potato, pumpkin, honey, prune, peach, apricot, cantaloupe, cherry, and almond.  Sounds delicious right?!  Some say it tastes like Cotton Candy!  The Mamey Sapote fruit has a large elongated dark brown seed and is ripe when the flesh is a vibrant salmon color.

History

Native to the tropical rainforests of Central America, as well as the Caribbean, it was treasured by pre-Columbian civilizations. The Pouteria sapota originated in the tropical lowlands of Mexico, for centuries the indigenous people, like the Mayans and Aztecs, used Pouteria sapota or Mamey Sapote for food, medicine and ceremonial rituals. The fruit and seeds were used to treat ear pain, skin infections, kidney stones, rheumatism, and digestive issues. Often referred to the oil in their language as the “Miracle oil” as it has helped them to grow longer, stronger hair and promote many benefits for the skin. The fruit was eaten raw or added to various foods. The Pixtle or Seed was toasted and ground to make traditional Oaxacan ceremonial drink, and used to flavor mole. The tree bark and wood was used, traditionally, for building shelters, furniture, as well as handmade tools. Gonzalo Hernandez de Oviedo provided a full description in 1529, including it in his review of New World fruits. Today Mamey Sapote fruit  and its oil is used in smoothies, desserts, milkshakes, ice creams, jams, pies, various cuisines, as well as in cosmetics, soaps and shampoos.

Nutrition

The fruit is an excellent source of Vitamins B6 and Vitamin C and E. It also is a good source of riboflavin, niacin, manganese, potassium, protein, and dietary fiber.  It is recognized for its high content of carotenoids and is considered to be a Superfood.

Emollients

Absorbancy

Mamey Sapote Oil nourishes the scalp, reducing hair breakage, and strengthens hair follicles, potentially stimulating hair growth. It penetrates the hair shafts, transforming dry, brittle, damaged hair into moisturized, nourished, strong and healthy strands.

What do the experts say?

According to dermatologist Sonia Khorana MD, “As with any oil, the only risk is potentially weighing down your hair, but you can’t really overuse it.  Mamey Sapote Oil might be too rich for some fine hair types, however, and individuals with nut allergies should exercise some caution when using Mamey Sapote Oil”. (Day, 2024)

Speaking about Mamey Sapote Oil, Dr. Omer Ibrahim MD says, “It also contains carotenoids, particularly alpha and beta carotenes, which convert to vitamin A and are beneficial for scalp health. Lycopene, an effective antioxidant also found in Mamey Oil, can help protect against oxidative damage”. (Gillette, 2024)
