Description

Black Sapote (Diospyros digyna or nigra) tree is a large evergreen tree that can reach the height of 25m (82 ft) at maturity, with a dense canopy and attractive foliage. The Black Sapote tree prefers to grow in tropical to subtropical, frost-free zones. The young trees are sensitive to frost, but the mature tree can tolerate very light freezes if protected.  A typical mature Black Sapote tree grows slowly for the first few years, then more rapidly, producing fruit after 3 to 4 years.  It can produce up to 500 fruits per year. The leaves are elliptic-oblong, tapered at both ends, dark green, glossy and 10-30 cm (3.9-11.8 in) long.  Some trees only bare male flowers, while other bare female and male. The fruit of the Black Sapota tree are tomato- like and measures 5-10 cm (2.0-3.9 in) and usually contain up to 12 seeds.  The fruit is ripe when the skin turns from green to a yellowish-green or dark brown. The fruit feels soft, like a ripe avocado.  The fruit taste like chocolate pudding with hints of sweet vanilla or caramel. History

Native to the tropical rainforests of Central America, Mexico, including the Caribbean and Hawaii, was treasured by pre-Columbian civilizations. The Black Sapote fruit originated in the tropical lowlands of Mexico, for centuries the indigenous people, like the Mayans and Aztecs, used Black Sapote fruit for medicine and ceremonial rituals. The fruit was eaten raw or added to various foods. Traditionally, the fruit was used medicinally to treat skin conditions, fevers, as well as a laxative. The fruit was used in various dishes, drinks as well as citrus/brandy. The wood of the tree was used for cabinetry. Today, Black Sapote fruit is grown in tropical and subtropical climates, including Florida, Hawaii, Brazil, Cuba, the Dominican Republic, Australia, and parts of Asia
